Email-to-Text Is Going Away: AT&T and T-Mobile Already Shut It Down, Verizon Is Next

If your text alerts quietly stopped arriving, this is why

For twenty years there was a free trick every IT person knew: send an email to 5551234567@txt.att.net (or vtext.com, or tmomail.net) and it arrived as a text message. Server monitors, Salesforce alerts, door sensors, on-call pages, dispatch systems — an enormous amount of business plumbing was quietly built on carrier email-to-SMS gateways, because they were free and they worked.

They're going away. Two of the three major US carriers have already pulled the plug, and the third has published its end date. If anything in your business texts people via an email address, you're on a countdown — and depending on your carrier, the messages may already be silently vanishing.

The status board, carrier by carrier

T-Mobile — gone (December 2024). The tmomail.net gateway no longer delivers. T-Mobile had already been filtering automated ("non-consumer") traffic on the gateway for years; the shutdown finished the job. Their policy is spelled out in T-Mobile's consumer vs. non-consumer messaging article.

AT&T — gone (June 17, 2025). Both txt.att.net and mms.att.net were retired, per AT&T's official support notice. Emails to those addresses now go nowhere — no bounce, no error, nothing. Which is exactly how most teams found out: an alert that didn't arrive.

Verizon — on the clock (by March 31, 2027). vtext.com and vzwpix.com still work today, but Verizon's shutdown notice sets retirement by March 31, 2027 — with the pointed caveat that "some senders may lose access to legacy email-to-text prior to that date." Translation: automated senders shouldn't count on making it to the deadline.

US Cellular — working, but don't get comfortable. email.uscc.net still delivers as of this writing, but with US Cellular's wireless operations now under T-Mobile's roof, its long-term odds look like T-Mobile's.

Why the carriers killed it

Three reasons, and they're legitimate. First, spam and spoofing: an open email-to-SMS bridge is a phisher's favorite tool, since email lets anyone impersonate anything. Second, the A2P rules: over the past few years carriers built a regulated system (10DLC registration) for application-to-person texting — registered senders, vetted campaigns, accountability — and the email gateways were a giant unregistered back door around it. Third, it was never reliable anyway: no delivery guarantees, no receipts, silent filtering. The carriers aren't wrong that it needed to go. That's cold comfort if your on-call alerts ran through it.

What this actually breaks

The pattern we see: nobody remembers building on email-to-SMS until it fails. Places to check — monitoring and alerting (Nagios, Zabbix, UPS units, backup jobs emailing a phone), Salesforce and CRM alerts (workflow alerts and email templates pointed at gateway addresses to "text" reps about hot leads or cases), facilities and IoT (alarm panels, freezer sensors, generators — often installed years ago by a vendor who's gone), dispatch and scheduling (field teams notified via carrier addresses in an old contact field), and anything with "@vtext.com" in a distribution list. A ten-minute search of your systems for txt.att.net, tmomail.net, and vtext.com is the whole audit.

What to use instead (and what not to buy)

The good news: the replacements are better and still cheap. The right one depends on what the message actually is.

If it's an internal alert, you may not need SMS at all. Push notifications are free and more reliable in 2026: Slack or Teams channels for team alerts, purpose-built apps like Pushover or ntfy for server monitoring (one-time or trivial cost), or — if the alert originates in Salesforce — native mobile push via custom notifications in Flow, which most orgs already own and never use.

If it genuinely must be a text (recipients without smartphones, customer-facing messages, compliance requirements), a proper SMS API or service — Twilio, Telnyx, and similar — sends registered, deliverable texts for around a penny each, and several vendors offer drop-in email-to-SMS bridges so your existing "send an email" systems don't need rebuilding; you just point them at a new address.

What not to do: panic-buy an enterprise messaging platform. Verizon steers businesses toward its Enterprise Messaging (EMAG) product, and for a company sending a few hundred alerts a month, that's a forklift where you need a hand truck. The A2P registration paperwork is the one genuinely annoying part of the modern path — it's also a one-time task.
